Are you creating a 5.1 surround sound soundtrack for your program? You'll want to consider the advantages of the 'Dolby E Stream' system.
The Dolby E system allows you to record multiple channels on to the broadcast industry's current two channel audio infrastructure. The beauty of the Dolby E system is that a single Dolby E bitstream can carry up to eight discrete audio channels, on a 16 or 20 bit, 48kHz AES pair.
For example, you could record your standard, two channel stereo audio on program channels 1 & 2. Then, on channels 3 & 4 you can record six tracks of surround sound and two additional M&E tracks. This ultimately allows for a very versitile master.
The Dolby E Stream system also allows for the creation of additonal 'metadata' information to help balance your program's audio against the onslaught of loud commercials. For a more in-depth technical discussion on Dolby E, surround sound and your sound mix - give Jeff Barringer a call.
